western civ

 This is my first blog for my new western civ class. The first day I was in class I forgot to do the blog and Friday and Saturday I was at my grandparents and didn't have my laptop. This week we have been studying ancient Greece. we have focused on the geography, the Mycenaean, the Trojan war, the Dorian and Homer. Greece is located in the Mediterranean and is made up of thousands of islands. The mainland is very mountainous and is not very suitable for travel or farming. The Mycenaean ruled from 2000 BC to 1300 BC. The Mycenaean had a seaboard trading culture with many large city states. Invaded Crete and absorbed their culture. Th Trojan war was fought between Troy ,a city state and Mycenaean over a kidnapped queen. Archaeologists now believe that this was an actual war. The Dorian invaded Greece after it had been destroyed by "Sea people". They were much less advanced and had no writing for 400 years. In that time stories were passed by word of mouth starting with a great story teller named Homer.

 Toady in class instead of reviewing the test we read and took notes on the next three sections. The first section was on the Rise of Christianity and talked about how Jesus' teachings spread. The most important reason they spread was because his teachings brought salvation to all. Christianity was a vision that a Roman emperor had before he went into battle. They won the battle and he made it so Christians would no longer be persecuted.

Greek Mytholgy

     Today class was supposed to mainly be on taking notes on Greek mythology,  but we got pretty off topic. We got off topic and spent most of class on questioning the credibility of sources. This started when students questioned if the Greek god's really weren't real and it was concluded there was no real way to prove there existence or disprove it. Then we started to broaden that to all religions. There is no real proof that God existed or didn't exist that is why people must have faith. Then we moved o to history where you said that history is written by the victors which means the civilizations who survived and passed on their history wrote about their history from their point of view. One example is if Germany won world war two, Hitler would be known as a great leader who defeated the allies and killed off the "evil" Jews. We concluded with that all these factors should be considered before coming to a conclusion on how history could have played out.

Test review

  Most of today in class was spent reviewing last weeks test from last week. Class was last mod today so everyone was more lethargic than usual. Since I was the only person to get a 100% on the test I really didn't need the review. The only plus side of reviewing was I had time to write the answers on the test so I could use it without my scan tron sheet. The rest of class time was spent taking notes on the population power point. We discussed immigration and emigration and why. We used the example of Canada and why people would want to immigrate there because their rate is so high. We came to the conclusion that the healthcare paid for by the government was a pull factor in people's decisions to move to Canada.
